Sonata Arctica is not your typical power metal band. Driven by powerful keyboards, progressive song-writing and a jaw-droppingly skilled frontman in Tony Kakko, the Finnish quintet is one of the most consistently stunning acts of their sub-genre, knocking the ball out of the park once again in 2016 with their ninth record, the aptly named The Ninth Hour.

Touring of the UK to support the album began at Southampton’s Engine Rooms on the 17th March, where Far Beyond Written’s Matt Mills met up with lead singer Tony to chat all about The Ninth Hour, as well as politics, the Finnish metal scene and the frontman’s planned solo project.
